Niagara’s Winter Wanderings & Wonderlands

Niagara Falls winter skyline

The enchanting winter wonderland of Niagara Falls, Ontario can be enjoyed in many ways making it a leading winter getaway destination. With the ornamental walls, lamp posts, trees, and historical buildings lining the paths from Dufferin Islands through Queen Victoria Park along the Falls, the parkway transforms into a winter wonderland, with both open and intimate spaces to enjoy the snow and scenery.

While the Falls themselves do not freeze, the mist it generates coats its surroundings in sheets of translucent, glass-like ice and icicles, appearing crystallized in a glittery frost and artistry only Mother Nature can provide. If you’ve been to Niagara Falls in the summer season, then this will be a whole new experience. For starters, you’ll want to bundle up. Sweaters, scarves, gloves, a hat, and hand-warmers are all good ideas. The weather closer to the brink of the Falls can vary from other parts of the city, so it’s best to be prepared. Part of the beauty of Niagara Falls in winter is watching the sun glisten off snow, creating a brilliant white, ideal for capturing perfectly lit photos with your camera. On the other hand, you may want to bring some sunglasses!

Since it gets dark out earlier in the winter, it is a good time to turn on the Falls illumination lights.

WINTER FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS

During the winter, until February 20th you can experience the magic of the season at the Winter Festival of Lights in Queen Victoria Park. The bulk of the Winter Festival of Lights takes place along an eight-kilometer illumination route that travels through the beautiful landscapes of Queen Victoria and the Niagara Parks, Dufferin Islands, and surrounding tourist districts, with satellite events and displays throughout the city.
